  Italy came out of the 2013 general elections extremely fragmented and with a hung Senate. The 2013 political elections showed three fundamental results: the triumph of Beppe Grillo’s MoVimento 5 Stelle, the débacle of Partito Democratico (PD), the center-left coalition led by Pier Luigi Bersani, and the comeback of Silvio Berlusconi’s center-right Popolo della Libertà (PdL), against all pre-electoral odds.

• The Papal Vanishing Act on Twitter

  On February 28 Pope Benedict XVI had barely left the Vatican for his temporary residence at Castel Gandolfo when his private apartments were sealed as is tradition and his Twitter account @Pontifex became inactive. The account was renamed to "Sede Vacante" (vacant seat), the photo of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI removed and all his 39 tweets, including his last tweet sent a couple of hours earlier, simply vanished.

  On the day that protesters against the 16 December Delhi gang-rape and the inaction of Manmohan Singh's government were amassing at India Gate I was travelling with my family through Delhi on our way to visit Mahatma Gandhi's tomb. Many of the main roads were being closed off by police and Delhi traffic was even worse than usual (we were told - having just arrived for holidays we didn't have much to compare with). Delhi was literally seething with long-pent up frustration and anger at the treatment of women and the cultural and legal structures that had allowed countless similar crimes to go unpunished in the past.
